OUR CAPTAIN’S LETTER

Dear Members

Happy New Year to you all

I do hope that you all had a restful and enjoyable festive break and managed to avoid overindulging too heavily on the mince pies and sherry!!

2026 promises to be an exciting year for us with a full schedule of golf to look forward to and I trust that you are as ‘revved up’ and ready to go as I am.

As a self-confessed golf addict, it is a great honour to be taking over the Captaincy of this fine society for 2026, a society which has been going from strength to strength since it was founded in 1933. We can all be rightly proud of our achievements in working together to make the BAGS a warm and welcoming place to meet and network in some of the most beautiful surroundings possible. Thanks to Peter for maintaining the excellent working relationships that we enjoy as a society with these prestigious clubs.

I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Dan for his outstanding year as our Captain in 2025. Dan did a fantastic job last year and I shall have my work cut out to maintain the standard set by Dan and his predecessors.

The committee is in safe hands with Billy Field continuing in his role as our President, Frank Hynes keeping us all honest in his role as Treasurer, and of course Peter Stocks, holding the society together in his tireless role as our secretary. I am delighted to welcome Charlie Everest on the committee this year as Adrian Peacock steps down. A big thank you Adrian for his commitment and service over his years on the committee. Matt Hale (2025 Len Trower winner) also takes up his role as vice-captain for 2026 in preparation for his year as captain.

As I announced at the annual lunch, my 2026 Captain’s Trip will take place over the 1st and 2nd July on two very fine heathland courses in Suffolk. Our trip will start on Bromswell Heath where we will play my old home club, Woodbridge Golf Club ranked No79 in England by Golf World. We will stay nearby at the majestic Kesgrave Hall before heading across to Purdis Heath on day 2 for a round of golf at Ipswich Golf Club which is ranked No 61. Two excellent courses that should offer a real challenge without being unbearably difficult, so I do hope that as many of you as possible will be able to make the trip. We are limited to 28 places so please let us know as soon as possible if you are planning to join us.

Looking ahead to the calendar for next year, you will note below that the Spring meeting will be held once more at The Grove. We have experienced some difficulty securing our traditional late March booking at The Berkshire, with one of their courses closed for works at that time, and the other undergoing maintenance mid-March, so we will once again visit The Grove which proved very popular last year.

Please do put our calendar dates into your diaries; we are, as ever, keen to see as many of you as possible throughout the year. Equally, we are always looking for all members to take part in our matches, and I would be grateful if you can provide an early indication of those matches you are available for i.e. BCO, RICS, Picks and the EPICS. We will field a team of 12 on each occasion, so kindly let Peter Stocks know if you would like to be considered for selection as soon as you are able to after receiving the notification.

I wish you all the very best for 2026 and hope to see as many of you as possible throughout the year.

Yours sincerely – Jason Warren – Captain 2026
